JANUARY 2010
12th 11:30 am-12:45 pm “Mussel Aches and Pains-Discovering a Hidden Treasure”
Brown Bag - Joseph Bergmann presents an educational and entertaining program on landsnails and freshwater mussels. A Texas Master Naturalist, Bergmann has co-authored several journal articles on these topics and consulted for government agencies, universities and nature conservation organizations. Bring your lunch and enjoy this unique program.
FEBRUARY 2010
9th 11:30 am-12:45 pm “Management and Conservation of Native Texas Fish”
Brown Bag - Presented by Dr. Gary Garrett, Director of the Watershed Policy and Management Program of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Dr. Garrett has authored more than 70 scientific publications on the subject of native fish recovery. He is a member of several endangered species recovery teams. Bring your lunch and come hear this fascinating program about our disappearing Texas resources.
13th 9:00 am Landscape Work Day and Volunteer Training
The second landscape work day of the winter. We need your help to cut back plants, prune, and clear debris and do general clean up of the grounds. Experienced RNC volunteers will be on hand to help any new volunteers learn the RNC approach to grounds maintenance. Refreshments will be served. FREE
13th 2:00-3:00 pm Membership Event
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, an invitation for members and volunteers. And a special invitation to our new members. Come for a casual “meet and greet” while enjoying the Hill Country photographs of Tom Schall, a new member and volunteer for the weekly fauna count, and an excellent photographer. You will enjoy the photographs and refreshments, wine included! FREE
23rd 10:00 am “Teacher/Education Fair”
We are revamping and updating our education program for the schools. Come to our teacher event on the 23rd and see where you fit in. We will have education materials, curriculum and lesson plans on display so you can see how easy it is to teach, or help teach, nature topics to school children. Choose the topics you feel most comfortable with. We have certified teachers to oversee our school programs so you don’t have to be a professional educator to teach or assist. Teachers and others are all welcome. All who think nature education should start early in life are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served. FREE
MARCH 2010
6th 9:00 am  Landscape Work Day and Volunteer Training
The third and final winter clean up. Help get the grounds prepared for spring. We need your help cutting back winter kill and doing general clean up of the grounds. Experienced RNC volunteers will be on hand to help any new volunteers learn the RNC approach to grounds maintenance. Refreshments will be served. FREE
6th 7:00 pm “Star Party”
Gerald D. (“Gerry”) Griffin will present “Back to the Future-The Moon” for the adults while the kids are engaged in related activities and games. Mr. Griffin is the former Director of the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston. Prior positions at NASA include Deputy Director of the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida and the Hugh F. Dryden Flight Research Center in California. During NASA’s Apollo Program, Mr. Griffin was a Flight Director in Mission Control and served in this capacity for all of the Apollo manned missions. He was the Lead Flight Director for three lunar landing missions. Come hear Mr. Griffin’s fascinating revelations about the moon. Afterward view the beautiful night sky through telescopes provided by the San Antonio Astronomical Association.
9th 11:30-12:45 Brown Bag Lunch and Learn
Kay L. Woodward and Bryant Saner, Jr. will be speaking on “Hill Country Archeology: Why it is Important to You”. Learn about our historic and prehistoric archeological sites and the plant and animal life that sustained many generations before us. Kay Woodward is a charter member of the Hill Country Archeological Association and in her 6th year in the Texas Archeological Stewardship Network for the Texas Historical Commission for Kerr County. Bryant Saner is with the Center for Archeological Research as a field and lab archeologist at UT-San Antonio.

20th 9:00-11:30 am “Landscape Work Day Rescheduled” and it just happens to be the first day of spring. We will work in the garden to finish up the preparations for spring. There will also be a special surprise for all of you volunteer helpers even if you don’t come to work in the garden on the 20th. If you have helped out during any of the work days this winter, join us at 10:00 am for something special. But you will have to be here to find out what.
APRIL 2010
13th 11:30-12:45 Brown Bag Lunch and Learn. “The Geology of the Hill Country” will be presented by Dr. Susan Longacre. Dr. Longacre received her PhD in geology from UT Austin. Her 32 year professional career included both technical professional and management assignments. Her projects have taken her to the Permian basin of west Texas and New Mexico, Ireland, the Middle East, offshore U.S. east Coast, and Kazakhstan. Susan continues as a consultant to Chevron. As an emeritus member of the Chevron Fellows, Susan continues active involvement, particularly in their group mentoring program. Dr. Longacre lives in the Texas Hill Country and enjoys sharing her knowledge of the landscape with others. She is an active member of the Riverside Nature Center.
17th 8:00 am – 3:00 pm “Earth Day Celebration and Native Plant Sale”
The Spring Festival you have come to expect with a large selection of native plants at reasonable prices, exciting activities for the kids, and interesting seminars for the adults. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. The Earth Day Celebration is co-sponsored by Riverside Nature Center and the Kerrville Chapter of the Native Plant Society. Come for family fun all day. Admission is FREE.
20th 10-11:30 am “National Volunteer Week” at RNC will feature a morning of fun and festivities highlighted by a tour of the meadow with Barbara Lowenthal. You will also get to peek at our education program in action as St. Peter’s school will be on site for a field trip. Our many wonderful, current volunteers will get a good surprise and all members, new and old-timers, volunteers and non-volunteers are all invited! Come and enjoy the refreshments and festivities. You will especially enjoy the meadow as Barbara tells you about the plants that are showing and the ones that are just beginning to appear. With the rains we have had this winter the gardens should be quite lovely by April 20th. Ya’ll come! FREE
MAY 2010
7th 6:00 – 7:30 The “Western Wine Share”
held the 1st Friday of each month, will be hosted by Riverside Nature Center in May. Come, meet new people and taste new wines. Mingle and sample the wines as you stroll the granite paths to the several tasting stations among the trees, flowers, and other plants. Bonus: Meet James Krueger and his partner, Amy Soucy, as they provide taste of the music they will perform live on Saturday the 8th. Couples should bring one bottle of wine. All should bring a wine glass. Admission is FREE.
8th 7:00 pm “Live Nature Themed Music & Song by Amy Soucy and James Krueger"
James’ music steadily presents us with a quite hope, instinctively reminding us of the saving beauty of the natural world…Amy is gifted with a versatile and charismatic voice. Amy and James have recently joined forces, forming a potent new folk act that has been garnering attention throughout the Northeast.
